What are doorway pages?

Online marketers often create "bridge" pages or "doorway" pages for search engines. Doorway pages are created to do well on certain search phrases which in turn will increase search engine ranking.

There are three destinct ways in which doorway pages are delivered.

Low Tech Delivery - which basically means that the pages has been created and submitted to the search engine. They are typically built for one keyword or phrase but doesn't really offer any great information for the visitor.

Agent Delivery - This is a doorway page that only the search engine sees. The advantage of this is that you can send the search engine to your keyword rich page but send your visitors to your actual content page.

IP Delivery / Page Cloaking - Last but not least, instead of delivering by agent name, you can also deliver pages to the search engines by IP address, assuming you've compiled a list of them and maintain it.

We are creating doorway pages for many of our clients. It is just part of search engine optimisation these days.

Whos next is Google's sites

They have the money, they have the motive so who should google buy next?

A post on Kuro5hin has prompted a string of one-offs, including this pieceby Chris Richardson and this one by Greg Sterling.

A list of candidateswas put up by Philipp of Google Blogoscoped, but many of the names seem to be missing the mark on Google's primary M.O. In our experience, they typically acquire:

  1. A small, relatively unknown company with an emerging technology such as Dodgeball
  2. A company that addresses a failed attempt, such as Urchin Analyticsfor cross-engine campaign management
  3. A company that improves on an existing offering, such as Keyhole
  4. A company that offers a specific knowledge that will allow them to enter a market, such as Blogger
Who will they acquire? Tough to say. Many have talked about TiVo, but it's hard to imagine Google going after the headaches inherent in such a big acquisition. Maybe another PVR company. Odeo may make a good candidate, as would Vonage, though speculation on that is old news.

Whatever happens, this kind of talk is what makes our job fun. Oh yea, there was also a joke about Apple during one of our pre-post discussions. Good to see it made the Kuro5hin list, even if it was just an add-on in the 'shoulda acquired Google' section at the very end.

Does your business need a web site?

You've been asked time and time again if your business has a web site. However you feel that your business is too small and your product cannot be sold on the Internet. So should you still have a web site built?

Well the answer is yes, if you have a business you should have a web site. It is also wise not to dismiss your product as one that cannot be sold over the Internet. Nowadays you will find that there is very little that cannot be sold over the Internet. The rule of thumb goes like this "If you can imagine it, some one will work out how to sell it online".

There is no need to invest all your time and effort, into selling your products online, although if the product lends itself to easy sales online you should be considering it. The point is that you should at least have a presence on the Internet so that customers, potential employees, business partners and investors can quickly and easily find out more about your business and the products and services you have to offer.

With that said, it is not enough to have just a web site. You need to have a professional-looking web site if you want to be taken seriously. Since many customers search online before purchasing anything, your web site may be the first chance you have at making a good impression on a potential customer. If your web site looks not the least bit professional more than likely your chance of making a good first impression will be lost.

One of the greatest things about the Internet is it is more or less a level playing field, where any business can compete with "the big boys" so to speak. As stated above you only get one opportunity to make a lasting first impression. With a well designed web site, your little business can project it's self to the world, the image and professionalism of a much larger company. The opposite may also occur for those who are "the big boys" with badly designed web site, one which is hard to navigate and badly designed, portrays to the world that you lack professionalism and credibility.

No matter how big or small your company is when it comes to a web site "size doesn't matter". I doesn't matter if you are a one man operation or a large corporation, if you don't have a web site you are losing business to those that do.

However there is an exception to the rule. It is actually better to have no web site at all than to have one that makes your business look bad. Just like your personal appearance is professional and your office or shop is clean and welcoming, your web site should be presented to the public in that same professional manner.

So with this in mind my next point is of some what important. So you have read this and you think it is time to have a web site developed, but how do you choose a web designer. When there is such price differences, well the most general way to look at it is "cheapest is not always the best". Make sure you sit down and see what they are offering, and check their portfolio out, and any additional costs you might be up for in the near future.

Overall, a web site is a must have for business today, and it should be taken very seriously.

Top mistakes first time web developers often make

So you are new to web design and development. You are thinking of creating a web site, well below are the top 15 mistakes created by first time web designers.

Most people who are reading this will probably know these already but it was writting for those who don't know.

  • Using frames
  • Going overboard with high tech "tricks"
  • Under construction signs
  • Misusing Graphics
  • Ransom note fonts
  • Complex backgrounds
  • To many animations
  • Orphan pages
  • No organisation
  • No unique content
  • Too many ideas
  • No authoritativeness
  • Outdated links or information
  • Negative declarations
  • Link problems
To often these mistakes are made, and it some times it cannot be helped. However if we try to keep these in mind we have a better opportunity to create a cleaner and better designed world wide web.

A well designed and developed web site can give you the desired effect that you are looking for. I have personally redevloped many clients web sites that were developed previously in the web page boom when businesses wanted web sites but didn't care what they looked like or how they functioned.

On the flip side you could say that in a few years won't we be saying the same thing about table designs. Well you are write we already are, there is a big movement for web sites to use CSS positioning now for the creation of layouts and there is not doubt that soon after that there will be something new.

So all we can do is develop using the latest technologies that will ensure us the chance to have a web site that will stay current for a little while.

Getting down to basics with a website

What is a web site?

A web site is a associated collection of web pages on the world wide web, consisting of files that are organised into a hierarchy. Each file/document can consist of a combination of graphics, text, audio video and other dynamic or static material. A website is most commonly used as a communication medium between a business and client or business and business. They can usually be accessed by using a search engine or typing in the web site address or domain name into an internet browser.

56% of businesses surveyed identified that they had already recovered their investment in e-business, with 22% of businesses that have recovered their investment achieving a greater than 50 percent return on that investment.

In July 2003 some 49% of all small to medium enterprises indicated a potential to use e-commerce to sell their products.

What are the benefits?

A website is a dynamic and cost effective way to reach new and existing customers, on a local, national or global scale.

A carefully constructed website, like those developed by Able Net Design, can attract the right users and may thus establish the following benefits.

  • Visual Display - Showcase of products services to likely customers
  • Sales - Bring forth additional recenue and greater awareness
  • Information - Supply further information to new and existing customers
  • Ehanced service - By providing a further contact method for customers
Other great facts

68% of all small to medium enterprises surveyed indicated that their expectations for all e-commerce have been met.

32% of all small businesses and 63% of medium businesses surveyed, use the internet for receiving payment.

45% of small and 64% of medium businesses surveyed use the internet to make purchases.

44% of small and 84% of medium businesses surveyed have a web site.

82% of small to medium enterprises surveyed who are connected to the internet search for information regularly.

93% of internet-connected small to medium enterprises surveyed use email as a form of communication.

81% of small and 98% of medium businesses surveyed are connected to the internet.

MSN catching up

It seems that finely MSN or should is say Microsoft have caught up with what the world is looking for in a internet browser.

The new MSN toolbar allows tabbed browsing. It seems a smart move by
Microsoft because those that want tabbed browsing have to download the toolbar and indirectly would end up using MSN as their main search enigne. Well that is the way i look at it.

Tabbed browsing is the reason why many have turned to FireFox as their preferred web browsing tool. Will this effect FireFox's growth in the web browsing market?

Google PR

Google PageRank (PR) is based on two factors. Quantity and PR quality of your incoming links. The higher your incoming links PR is and the fewer outgoing links on the page, the higher the PR will be. The PR of a website is based on a page-per-page basis so it is quite common to have different PR's throughout one website.

PR is displayed by a low PR0 to the very high and almost unachievable PR10. Yahoo is one website that I have personally viewed that has a PR10 ranking.

A good PR is part of the famous Google Algorithm, which determines where your website is displayed on their search results. This is especially noticeable with more competitive keywords. However it is important to note that a high PR is only one factor in as many as 100 others that determine where your website is listed.

It has been noted through out the web that the relevance of PR has lessened over time, so it is probably safe to say that chasing PR is less important then adding theme based inbound links.

It is also safe to say that adding incoming links that have a low PR should not be a concern. It is more effective to add incoming links that have strong theme connections and good quality content.

Choose the right keywords

If you target the wrong keywords all your efforts will be in vain. Choose the right keywords, and you'll see traffic skyrocket. I suggest you think long and hard about what keywords would be used to find you.

Since the internet has grown so much you hardly want to target a single word. It is suggested in many search engine optimisation texts to PAIR your keywords with something more generic. For instance "perth web design" will be fair easier to promote then "web design".

Using our online marketing plan and processes that we have developed over the years we work with clients to find keywords that when paired with more generic keywords can produce fantastic results. I often find it amazing when i find clients that have keywords like "weddings, broome, perth" when effectivly they should have something like "broome weddings, perth weddings".

Number 1 rule: Always PAIR your keywords with a keywords that is more descriptive.

This is just the beginning ill post more on the subject later on. Remember tell your friends about us.
